About me

Dr. Kumar has extensive experience successfully treating all manner of upper limb, lower limb and spinal musculoskeletal injuries and conditions causing pain or impairing performance. He has over 15 years experience treating NHS, military and private patients, as well as elite sportsmen and women of all abilities and ages.

He draws upon his previous training and postgraduate qualifications in Surgery, high performance Sports Medicine and General Practice to undertake in-depth clinical evaluation and formulate holistic, bespoke management plans that help his patients achieve their goals.

As an educationalist, having designed, established and taught on successful degree programs in Sports Medicine Exercise and Health at University College London, he ensures all his patients acquire a good understanding of their diagnosis and rehabilitation strategies to enable optimum recovery.

Dr. Kumar has special expertise and qualifications in diagnostic ultrasound imaging of orthopaedic complaints to help confirm an accurate diagnosis and evaluate the extent of any injury during the consultation. He has rapid access to advanced imaging such as MRI, CT and bone scans, and goes through the images with his patents in detail.

He is skilled in using a variety of injection therapies and performing minimally invasive procedures to spinal and peripheral joints and soft tissues. He uses real time ultrasound or x-ray image guidance to ensure safe, targeted procedures to help expedite recovery from acute injuries or chronic pain.

He has particular expertise in tendinopathy, chronic pain management, concussion, complex and recurrent sports injuries, and youth and adolescent athletes, and has published in these fields. He has led the National Tendinopathy Centre for clinical and research excellence for five years; delivered a multidisciplinary concussion service; and was awarded a British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Fellowship that took him to Centre's of Excellence at Harvard in the USA and the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Canada, to study Sport & Exercise Medicine for children and adolescents.

Dr. Kumar also provides medical evaluation and guidance for patients experiencing symptoms when exercising, or require bespoke exercise advice for their chronic disease, or wish to understand how to optimise their health, exercise and sport performance.

He uses his experience and network from working within elite sports to provide the same high level care to all his patients of all levels of ability. He works closely with specialist surgical, medical and allied health colleagues to deliver the best possible outcomes for all his patients.

Dr Kumar is currently Consultant to Reading Football Club, AFC Wimbledon, the European Tour Golf, and the English National Ballet School. Previous positions include with West Ham United Football Club, The English Football Association, Saracens Rugby, The English Cricket Board, British Athletics, The London Marathon and Triathlon, England Hockey, The British Olympic Association, The English Institute for Sport, University College Hospital London, Central London Community Health NHS Trust, the Ministry of Defense, and Aspetar - Qatar Athlete Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Hospital. He has been medical officer at several major Games, including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
