About me

Mr Tate trained in London and Hong Kong and has been a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons since 1985. He was appointed a Master of Surgery at Southampton University in 1988. He has been a consultant surgeon in Bath since 1993. He is qualified in both upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery and has considerable experience in abdominal hernia surgery.

Mr Tate's major experience is in laparoscopic minimal access surgery ('keyhole surgery'). He was at the forefront of research in this field from 1990 and has published several research papers in the subject. He was a teacher at Royal College of Surgeons surgical courses. He has carried out a wide range of operations using keyhole techniques.

As a member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons Executive Committee, Mr Tate organised the National Conference of Laparoscopic Surgeons and continues to teach keyhole techniques both internationally and locally. He has seen dramatic changes in patient recovery and outcomes with this type of surgery.

His main clinical areas of interest are surgery for gallstones and he was one of the first surgeons in the UK to offer this treatment on a day case basis in suitable cases. He is an experienced colorectal cancer surgeon as well as having extensive knowledge of less serious conditions such as haemorrhoids. He has over 30 years' experience in hernia surgery including recurrent and large incisional hernias. He is passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes and maintaining a minimally invasive approach.
