About me

Dr James Louis is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust with over 15 years of experience in mental health services. He is on the Specialist Register of General Medical Council (GMC) for Adult Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry. He is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Louis completed both his basic and higher training in psychiatry in the UK within a Psychiatric Training Scheme recognised by The Royal College of Psychiatrists. During his training, he had experience in Adult Psychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Psychiatry, Learning Disability, Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. After completion of this training he was awarded Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) by PMETB and GMC.

He currently specialises in working with adults with a range of complex difficulties and is also endorsed by the General Medical Council in the treatment and management of mental health problems associated with physical health issues. In addition, he is passionate about teaching and provides training, consultation, and supervision to mental health professionals including trainee psychiatrists based both within and outside of the UK. He has been an examiner for MRCPsych for the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Louis has always shown a special interest in psychotherapeutic treatment methods and has had experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytical Therapy (CAT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Family Therapy, Group Therapy and Experiential Dynamic Therapy. He went on to specialise and train in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) with Josette ten Have-de Labije and Dr Rob Neborsky. He is a member of ISTDP UK and an Advanced Member of IEDTA (International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association). He is currently training to be a trainer in ISTDP.

Dr Louis has also been practicing Clinical Hypnotherapy for over 25 years. He holds a Medical Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy and is also a qualified practitioner of Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. He is a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Dr Louis’ clinical expertise in different areas as mentioned above along with his interest and experience in transcendental and mindfulness meditation, yoga and healthy nutrition places him in a unique position to practice a holistic and integrative approach to psychiatry. He values each individual as a unified whole and compassionately considers and deals with mental, physical, spiritual, social, and environmental factors that can simultaneously affect health and well-being.
