About me

Following training in Manchester, Paris and Edinburgh I was appointed to Hope Hospital, now Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, in December 1991 where I have practiced since as a Consultant Kidney Specialist.
I was the clinical director between 1994 and 2007 during which time I led the Greater Manchester Kidney Programme establishing a network of multi professional care to improve services and outcomes for people with kidney disease. In 2007 I became the National Director for Kidney Care or Renal Tsar, at the Department of Health developing and implementing policies for prevention and early detection of kidney disease, spearheading improvements to dialysis care and increasing kidney transplantation.
I am now the senior kidney consultant in Manchester and my interests are in reducing board training and wide experience in the whole spectrum of kidney disease, cardiorenal syndrome and hypertension the risks and impact of kidney disease on individuals and their families. I was the President of the Renal Association ( the professional society for kidney doctors) between 2016 - 18 and am the Chair of Kidney Care UK . I was awarded an OBE for services to kidney patients in the 2018 birthday honours.
