About me
Dr Tess McPherson is a Consultant Dermatologist and Senior Clinical Lecturer (Oxford University Hospitals). She leads the paediatric dermatology service in Oxford. Her particular areas of specialism are Paediatric Dermatology, Adolescent Dermatology, General Dermatology, Atopic Eczema, Psoriasis, Acne, Psycho-Dermatology and Medical Student Education (Clinical Tutor for the undergraduate dermatology course).
Dr McPherson trained at Cambridge University and London at the Imperial College School of Medicine where she graduated with honours and was awarded the Medicine prize for Undergraduates. She has lived and worked in Guyana, South America and the United States. In Guyana she worked for the World Health Organisation (WHO) to develop improved skin care and treatment programmes for patients.
She subsequently continued her specialist dermatology training at the University of Oxford as an Academic Clinical Lecturer, where she combined clinical training with immunological research into Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM). She further specialised in Paediatric Dermatology with a fellowship at Birmingham’s Children's Hospital.
Her current research interests include Atopic Eczema and patient experiences of skin disease. She is the lead clinician on a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) which has established a web resource for young adults with skin disease (healthtalk.org.uk). She has set up an award winning specialist service for young people with skin disease with psychological support. She teaches at the University of Oxford, national courses on paediatric dermatology and is regularly invited to talk at conferences. She has been on the Executive Committee of the British Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Dermatology (BSPD) since 2015 and is president elect (2020).
