Dr Jenkins trained at Cambridge University (pre-clinical studies) and St Thomas’ Hospital. He qualified in 1982. Subsequently he was a research fellow and senior registrar at St Thomas’ and his research doctorate examined the effects of diet on the intestine. He was appointed as a Consultant Physician in 1994.
He has maintained his interest in nutrition and led the Clinical Nutrition Team at the Princess Royal University Hospital. His other main interests centre on investigation and treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion and inflammatory bowel disease. He also has extensive experience in wireless capsule endoscopy, which allows non-invasive visualisation of the intestine via a miniature camera enclosed within a capsule that is swallowed by the patient.
