About me
I graduated from University of Glasgow Medical school in 2002 and did my Basic Surgical Training in the West of Scotland. After a year as a Registrar in London, where I worked at Kings College Hospital and St Georges Hospital, I came back to complete my Neurosurgical training in Scotland during which I trained in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. I went back to St Georges Hospital to do a Sub-specialist Fellowship in Neurosurgery, where I gained experience in all aspects of General Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology including Awake Craniotomy, Fluorescence guided tumour resection and management of Low Grade Gliomas. After the Fellowship I returned to Edinburgh to take up a Consultant post at the Western General Hospital.
My operative NHS practice includes management of emergency and elective Spinal pathologies including Degenerative Spine, which makes up 50% of my operative workload and I consults with around 500 patients with back and neck pain, as well as other spinal conditions in my out-patient clinics a year.
In addition to General Neurosurgery, I have a subspecialist interest in Brain Tumours (sub-speciality interest) and lead the Adult Neuro-oncology Surgical service.
I have a keen interest in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and have completed a Masters in Surgical Education to help me improve is educational skills. I am an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Clinical Tutor at the University of Edinburgh and have recently been accredited as a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators.
In addition, I have research interests in Neurotrauma, Neuro-Oncology and Surgical Assessment. I havemany published papers and abstracts and and have presented at National and International meetings. I am currently actively involved in clinical research in Neuro-oncology with a number of different University Academic departments.
