About me

Dr de Wet has 15 years’ experience as a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist and Specialist in Substance Misuse.

He is certified by the General Medical Council as holding special qualifications and expertise in the management of addictions.

Dr de Wet qualified at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and trained in psychiatry at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals and Institute of Psychiatry in London, where his training included general adult psychiatry, neuro-psychiatry and learning disability. He worked in the National Psychosis Unit and also undertook research into substance misuse in the National Addictions Centre. He obtained an MSc in Research Methods and Design from Kings College and the Institute of Psychiatry in London in 2004.

He has published research in both opiate and benzodiazepine misuse.

He has extensive clinical experience in treating patients with addictions, including alcohol dependency, opiate dependency, benzodiazepine dependency, stimulants, cannabis, prescription and over the counter medications and club drugs.

Dr De Wet works as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist who also provides the following private services:

* Out-patient medical and psychological treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma and health-related stress in Penn Hill, Poole, Dorset

* In-patient addictions treatment including drug and alcohol detoxification, rehabilitation and counselling at Clouds House, East Knoyle, Wiltshire
