- Short Term Psychodynamic Therapy
Dr Adam Cleary is a consultant clinical psychologist, trainer and supervisor with over twenty years’ experience working in the National Health Service (NHS) and in independent practice in the UK, with a particular interest in trauma, emotions and health. He is also an IEDTA accredited psychotherapist having completed 3 year post doctoral core training in brief experiential dynamic therapy (EDT/ISTDP) with Dr Jessica Bolton.
Dr Cleary received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Birmingham in 2002. He has worked in mental health services for over twenty years, in liaison psychiatry services in acute hospitals and currently works in the NHS within a multi-disciplinary pain service and alongside GP’s in community rheumatology services across central Birmingham. He has a particular interest in working with individuals who have problems with longstanding anxiety and treatment-resistant mood disturbance, who often find themselves 'in the gaps between services', as well as those diagnosed with physical health conditions such as auto-immune disorders, neuropsychological conditions, fibromyalgia and chronic pain.
Areas of interest
It is an exciting time of real innovation in evidence based clinical practice. Developing knowledge from neuroscience, attachment theory and the physiological threat systems in the body with our understanding of how adverse life experiences shape the central nervous system and make us vulnerable to debilitating symptoms has deep and far reaching implications on the ways in which our emotions impact upon our health. By encouraging the direct experience of disallowed feelings, we can bring quicker and more effective improvements in our physical and psychological lives.
I work with people with a wide range of emotional and physical problems but my approach is most useful for people who have have felt anxious or low for a long time, who have difficulties in relationships, adjusting to long term health problems or who have low self-esteem.
