I am a Consultant Medical Oncologist specializing in cancer diagnosis, medical treatment, and follow-up for women (and men) with breast cancer, with an emphasis in helping patients to understand their disease and rationale for treatment, resulting in the best decision for that person in their given situation. I practise at Spire Methley Park Hospital and Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. I have expertise in treating patients with newly diagnosed early breast cancer either before or after surgery, and in those people where cancer returns some time after previous treatments.
Modern treatment for cancer requires the careful integration of diagnostic procedures, surgical treatment, medical therapies with chemotherapy, biological or endocrine therapy, and radiotherapy. This is brought about through a multidisciplinary team approach where pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, and specialist nurses meet on a regular basis to consider the diagnosis and best treatment for each patient. I am a member of the multidisciplinary team for breast and lung cancers at Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust working between Pinderfields and Dewsbury district hospitals.
For the last 3 years I have chaired the West Yorkshire Breast Cancer Network Group working with colleagues to improve standards of Breast cancer care across the region by focusing on attention the the NICE quality standards and Peer Review which help to assure the quality of NHS practice.
Modern cancer therapies increasingly exploit knowledge of the nature of each individual tumour. Treatments have advanced remarkably in recent years by identifying specific changes present in cancer cells for which targeting drugs are known.
More specific choices for treatment consequently are found, with better chances of success. As such I am familiar in the analysis of the individual tumour of patients, with several standard tests applied to refine treatment choices for breast cancers and, where appropriate, special tests to guide treatment using technologies such as Oncotype DX.
I have several years of experience treating breast cancer (in men as well as in women) using chemotherapy, hormonal and biological therapy (e.g , trastuzumab (Herceptin) pertuzumab (Perjeta), trastuzumab emtansine (Kadcyla) and everolimus (Afinitor)). I also have extensive experience in supportive therapies such as bisphosphonates and RANK-ligand inhibitors (e.g. Denosumab).
Above all I value strongly doing my utmost to support you through what can be a bewildering array of considerations and options and the most testing experience you may face. I aim to relate information in an understandable way, placing an emphasis on understanding the individual needs and preferences that make you who are.

I enjoy spending time with my wife and children. I find time tending to my garden helps to relieve the stresses of modern living.
Over the summer I enjoy an abbreviated season of 20/20 cricket, playing social cricket for the Cookridge Hospital Cricket Team.
I have published articles on the management of chemotherapy complications in the British Medical Journal, an article on an unexpected sequence specific chemotherapy toxicity in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and a look at future approaches to use viruses to stimulate the immune system against cancers in Clinical Cancer Research.
