About us

Mr Ben Grey is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT), working at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Trafford General Hospitals. Mr Grey practices all components of general urology but he has a sub-specialty interest and tertiary referral practice in urinary tract (kidney, ureter, bladder) stone management.

He offers the full range of therapeutic options for stone disease including minimally invasive endourology/laparoscopy techniques and shockwave lithotripsy. He leads the complex stone service at CMFT and sees patients from across NW England.

He graduated from the University of Manchester and undertook surgical training in Manchester and the North West. He has gained further specialist experience at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA and at stone centres in Amsterdam and Turin. An active researcher, with over 30 publications and book chapters to date, he received his research doctorate (MD) from the University of Manchester after an intensive study of prostate stem cell biology at the Christie Hospital. He is also a qualified educator (PGCert Distinction) with roles at the University of Manchester (Honorary Senior Lecturer), NW Deanery and as an invited faculty member on courses nationwide.

The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) awarded Mr Grey the John Anderson award in 2015. This award recognises an individual who has contributed to urology in an outstanding or inspirational way.

Mr Grey leads on audit and governance for the CMFT Urology Department and his current research interests focus on service improvement (patient safety/satisfaction and efficiency), with the ultimate aim of maximising patients’ experience.

Mr Grey enjoys spending time with his wife watching their two boys grow up. Albeit that his playing days are now over, he enjoys watching both rugby and football games and exercises playing squash and running.
