About me

Mr. Smith graduated as MB ChB from Medical School from the University of Glasgow in 2000. As an undergraduate, he also completed a 2 year Honours Batchelor of Science Degree. He then completed his basic and specialist surgical training in Southern Ireland. This was then followed by two prestigious 1-year colorectal fellowships in Professor Ara Darzi’s Unit in St Mary’s Hospital, London and the world famous Department of Colorectal Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. These fellowships incorporated specialisation in both open and laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery where in addition to major surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, Mr Smith specialised in surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, faecal incontinence, hernia repair, gallbladder surgery and colonoscopy, and learned the latest techniques from world experts.

Now as an established consultant in the UK, Mr Smith has continued to perform a wide array of general and coloproctological surgery but he has also tried to pioneer the best techniques for patients and was one of the first wave of surgeons in the UK to complete training in and perform transanal TME surgery for rectal cancer. He has also developed major experience in colonoscopy and the treatment of rectal bleeding.

In addition to his surgical commitments, Mr Smith has a strong interest in surgical research, in particular investigating minimally invasive and non-operative (“watch and wait”) treatment for rectal cancer. In this regard, Mr Smith’s research also explores the concept of doing the right procedure for the right patient – in particular for elderly or comorbid patients for whom surgery may not globally be in their best interests. Mr Smith also works closely with The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Merseyside and has ongoing research interests with St Mark’s Hospital in London, The Cleveland Clinic, USA and several other international centres of excellence for colorectal cancer care. Currently he has 26 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a frequently invited speaker at both national and international meetings.

Mr Smith has also won many prizes and awards throughout his career, both nationally and internationally.
