Mr Mark Zammit is a consultant surgeon with Practising Priveleges at the Nuffield Brentwood Hospital and Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood. He qualified as a medical doctor in Malta and has worked in the NHS since 2000. He spent time doing clinical research in Glasgow, completed Higher Specialist Training in Manchester and did a Fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and advanced/complex open surgery in Basingstoke. Following this, he moved to Essex to take up a consultant post at Basildon Hospital.
Mr Zammit manages a range of general surgical conditions including bowel cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, gallstones, inguinal and abdominal wall hernias, and various anal conditions such as haemorrhoids. He also performs general surgical operations on children (including circumcisions, hernia operations, surgery for undescended testicles, and removal of lumps and bumps and ingrowing toenails), and is the lead for general paediatric surgery at Basildon Hospital. He is also a fully trained endoscopist with JAG accreditation in colonoscopy. Mr Zammit performs approximately 50 major bowel operations per year (for benign and cancerous conditions) and submits his data to the National Bowel Cancer Audit. He uses laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques whenever appropriate, and performs most of his operations as day-cases. For major surgery Mr Zammit uses Enhanced Recovery techniques, helping patients to recover sooner.
Mr Zammit firmly believes in actively involving patients and their family in treatment decisions, and places patients at the centre of care.
