Mr Shahzad Raja is consultant cardiac surgeon at Harefield Hospital. He is a recognised leader in the field of heart bypass surgery and has set institutional benchmarks for the specialty. Almost all of his patients currently receive multiple arterial grafts regardless of their age and have their heart bypass surgery performed on a beating heart. He is currently running one of the largest and most respected heart bypass programs in the UK. As a consequence, Mr Raja is a much sought after speaker both nationally and internationally.
The results from his most recent surgical series at Harefield Hospital highlight the outstanding outcomes achieved by Mr Raja in the field of heart bypass surgery.
From March 2012 to May 2013, Mr Raja has performed the highest number of heart bypass operations (170 cases) at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital. His patients presented a high risk profile having urgent/emergent indication in 67% of cases and being obese or diabetic in 30% and 34% cases respectively. Despite such a high risk profile no patient experienced operative death (national rate 1.5%). No patient presented deep sternal wound infection against a national rate of 5%. Incidence of postoperative stroke was 1.8% against a national rate of 3.2% (see figure below). Overall, he achieved the lowest operative mortality amongst consultants in the trust.
