Mr Oates started as a Theatre Technician in the UK and New Zealand. He graduated from Birmingham University Medical School in 1979. He spent 4 years ENT Registrar training in the West Midlands (Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham Children's and Heartlands Hospitals) then 4 years Higher Surgical Training as Senior Registrar (Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and Derby Royal Infirmary). Appointed Consultant by West Midlands Regional Health Authority 1990.
