Dr Alan Desmond treats patients with a broad range of recent-onset and longstanding problems affecting their stomach and bowel. He has particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), heartburn, reflux oesophagitis, Barrett’s oesophagus and patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract. Alan works in close collaboration with clinical dieticians who have specific expertise in the dietary management of gastro-intestinal disorders. Alan performs gastroscopies and colonoscopies on-site at Mount Stuart Hospital and works to ensure that waiting times for these important tests are kept as short as possible.

Alan has a strong track record in clinical research and has published several influential papers on medical imaging in chronic gastro-intestinal disorders. During his time at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre in Ireland, he collaborated on several research papers in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Courses offered to GPs
Alan is a regular contributor to GP educational sessions in the Torbay area and has recently spoken on early diagnosis of upper gastro-intestinal malignancies, management of patients with Barrett's oesophagus and up-to-date management of patients with dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
