About me

I am a Chartered Psychologist who has qualified as a Counselling Psychologist. My counselling experience is that from 1989 to 2011 I worked as the manager and principal counsellor within the Occupational Health Unit (OHU) at South Yorkshire Police. I ran a counselling team of 3 full time staff and a number of visiting therapists who provided a variety of types and hours within the service.
This work involved me in working with individual staff members and sometimes their partners providing Counselling services across a wide range of issues. I specialised in working with Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) but also regularly saw clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, work related stress, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and at times I saw clients who had experienced a negative event in their current life that had triggered impact from trauma much earlier in life. This work also involved providing support to specialist Police Officers who were working in jobs such as sexual offences, domestic violence, disaster identification teams, road death investigation teams, and firearms. The work also involved providing crisis intervention input after significant events to both individuals and groups.
During the period 1990 to 1998 I also trained and volunteered as a couples therapist with the RELATE organisation.

My qualifications are varied having a training in the Person Centred tradition up to Masters level but also with specialist training in CBT and EMDR and since 2011 I have been practicing using mindfulness based cognitive therapy. This means I fundamentally believe in the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship but also the importance of working with technique based work too as needed by Clients.

At this time I work with a variety of counselling issues and with Clients who are both self and work based referrals as well as with agencies such as Bupa.

As well as a Masters Degree and my registration as a practitioner psychologist with HCPC I have attended a Diploma in CBT and master classes in a number of areas of CBT.

I attend regular supervision for both my general practice as a Psychologist and also specialist supervision for my EMDR practice.
In recent years have been developing a particular interest in the recent development / research into what neuroscience can tell us about psychotherapy and the particular developments in the understanding of dissociation.
