I’ve accumulated a huge experience in all the anaesthetic aspects of cardiac surgery. I’ve got a long experience in cardiac anaesthesia, in scheduled, urgent and emergency procedures. In Italy, during my 17 years consultant job, I’ve performed more than 2,000 cardiac procedures as an anaesthetist, and I treated more than 3,500 patients in adult post-cardiac surgery intensive care unit. In the UK I did more than 700 procedures according with my daily updated logbook; several of those cases are thoracic. I’m confident on off-pump CABG, minimally invasive direct CABG, mitral valve repair, aortic valve homograft replacement, ascending aorta and arch surgery, minimally invasive mitral valve repair/replacement, percutaneous PFO closure and percutaneous aortic valve replacement
Areas of interest
Transoesophageal Echocardiograpy; Difficult airway management; Perioperative coagulation management
Current NHS consultant posts held
Substantive Consultant at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London (UK)
I’m particularly interested in coagulation and inflammation problems related to cardiac surgery. I’ve experience in thromboelastography (TEG) and thromboelastometry (ROTEM), and I can use HMS-Hepcon (Medtronic) to assess the residual dose of heparin to be reversed. I routinely use POC assessment of platelets function (Multiplate and Very Now). I attended courses on coagulation management in Italy, Denmark and Austria.
I like running, I ran several half marathons and a marathon as well (with a quite respectful time of 3h 33m). I love reading classics and gardening books. I can play piano.
