About me

Robert Hensher is a graduate of Liverpool University. He qualified Bachelor of Dental Surgery 1972 & MB ChB 1st Cl.Hons 1978 and was awarded the Henry Briggs Gold Medal.

After pre registration medical registration posts, including a professorial medical house officer (HO) Post, he had a broad training with periods in orthopaedics, casualty, general & vascular surgery before returning to Oral and maxillo facial (OMF). He was appointed Registrar to Westminster & Queen Mary's Roehampton, Hospitals in 1981. From there he was seconded to the prestigious Oral and maxillo facial (OMF) Rotation at Louisiana State University and Charity Hospital New Orleans. Returning to London he progressed to senior registrar positions at Westminster and Queen Mary's Roehampton Hospitals, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children together with University College Hospital.

This period of training included a secondment to The Zahn, Mund und Kiefer (ZMK) Unit in Münster West Germany. During this attachment he wrote a number of papers for the German and International journals. He undertook research developing a novel graft/implant material and unusually was awarded both the NL Rowe and the BAOMS President’s Prizes – one of the few to win both.

He was appointed Consultant Oral and Maxillo Facial (OMF) Surgeon to Gloucester Cheltenham & Cirencester Hospitals in 1986, remaining in this post till 2000. It was during this period he pioneered TMJ Replacement for which he now has a national and international reputation.

He has written chapters in standard text books and numerous professional papers on jaw joint replacement. He was invited to join the American Society of TMJ Surgeons, one of the first non American Surgeons to be so invited. He is also one of the most senior maxillo-facial surgeons in London.

His outside interests are music, motorcycling, historic car restoration and equestrianism. Recently retired medical officer to Badminton Horse Trials and The Isle of Man TT Races. He holds an ACU Motorsport Doctor's licence.

Robert Hensher is married with one son and divides his time between practising in London and his home in Dorset.

Jaw joint surgery, partcularly prosthetic replacement; Dental implantology, including complex case management with bone grafting techniques; Salivary gland surgery; Corrective jaw surgery (cosmetic and functional osteotomies).
