Mr Branavan Sivakumar graduated from the Royal Free Medical School in 1998 which included a bachelor of sciences degree in Anatomy at University College London. After 3 years of training in general surgery he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) in 2001. His plastic surgical training included a 2 year post-graduate Doctorate in Medicine (MD) carried out at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology part of Imperial College and the RAFT institute of Plastic Surgery. His research on the causes for tendon and joint damage in hands affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis was sponsored by a Royal College of Surgeons Research Award.
He has published extensively in both scientific and clinical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the American and European Journals of Hand Surgery. He has also presented at both national and international meetings and has received an international research award at the European Conference of Scientists and Plastic Surgeons (ECSAPS) in 2005. Mr Sivakumar continues to be involved in medical research and supervises both MSc and MD projects linked with University College London and the National Institute of Medical Research. As a result of his research work he became a founder member of the American Society of Reconstructive Transplantation (ASRT).
