I have been working in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry for over 20 years, and as a Consultant for over 15years. I was a Consultant first in the NHS working for the Barnet, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust as the lead clinician for the Haringey Adolescent Outreach, at that time based in Tottenham. This service provided crisis and urgent care to adolescence with severe mental health difficulties within 7 days of referral to support them and also to reduce the risk of deterioration and admission to hospital. The team worked flexibly with young people and their families, meeting them wherever was comfortable and convenient, including at home and at school, and rarely in a clinic setting. I had always enjoyed my time as a higher trainee in Adolescent Mental Health inpatient units, including my 6 months in the Snowsfield Unit, then at Guy’s Hospital in south east London. I therefore moved unto a Consultant post in a medium secure unit for young people with mental health difficulties, where I also took up the post of Medical Director for that hospital. This unit met the needs of young people presenting with complex and high risk mental health presentations, all detained under the Mental Health Act.
After 5 years I moved on to become the Medical Director and Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in Priory Hospital North London, in Southgate, where I lead the Adolescent Mental Health inpatient unit, and supported the growth of that service from a 14 bedded to a 23 bedded service. During my tenure there, I also held the position of Clinical Director for CAMHS for Priory, working alongside operational managers to oversee the clinical care provided by the 7 CAMHS sites operated by Priory at that time. I also temporarily held the position of Medical Director for the Priory Group for 6 months whilst the position was recruited to permanently.
I subsequently became the Medical Director and Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in Priory Roehampton, in Barnes, where I lead the Adolescent Mental Health inpatient unit, and worked with my Senior Management colleagues to support the site to become ‘Good’ across all services in its most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, having always maintained a ‘Good’ rating for the CAMHS unit there throughout my time as its lead Consultant.
I began my medical training at Queen’s University, Belfast, and after qualifying worked for a couple of years as a physician in the Belfast City Hospital. I began my psychiatry training in Glasgow, in Hairmyers Hospital and then the Leverndale Hospital. I completed my psychiatric postgraduate training in Dublin under the auspices of Trinity College Dublin, working in St Patrick’s and St Loman’s hospitals before 18 months of child & adolescent psychiatry in inpatient and outpatient settings across Dublin. Having qualified in my postgraduate psychiatric exams, I completed my higher specialist training in child & adolescent psychiatry in London as part of the South London & Maudsley training scheme under Kings College, London. I undertook placements in Guys, and St Thomas’s as well as clinics in Southwark and Lambeth.
