About me

Born and bred in London, Charles qualified from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, part of Imperial College London, in 1999. After completing his general surgical training he was appointed to the highly regarded London Pan-Thames Regional Specialist Training Programme in Plastic Surgery.

He achieved the highest mark in the United Kingdom for the FRCS(plast) exit exam and has received a number of awards and grants that have enabled him to study abroad the latest techniques in this exciting specialty.

He trained in Plastic Surgery for 8 years before deciding to bring his children up outside of London. He took up his current post as NHS Consultant in Plastic Surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

Charles Durrant is on the GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery and is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS)

As well as being comprehensively trained in all aspects of reconstructive surgery, Charles has received aesthetic training throughout his plastic surgery training and has also undergone dedicated aesthetic fellowships at the McIndoe Surgical Centre and Australia. He regularly attends national and international conferences in both reconstructive and aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Charles works with the Nuffield Health Group and Spire Healthcare to provide the full range of cosmetic surgery procedures. He is also recognised by all major providers of health insurance.

Charles' main NHS interests lie in breast reconstruction following cancer surgery or congenital deformities, head and neck surgery, and perineal reconstruction as well as skin cancer management. His philosophy is that not only can techniques involved in the reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery be translated to cosmetic practice, but also that it is essential that the operating surgeon have exquisite knowledge of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgical principles in order to achieve the best outcomes in terms of both form and function.

Charles has a specific interest in the ethical issues surrounding plastic surgery and used both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery as the central point to his Masters thesis in Medical Ethics, for which he was awarded a Merit. He believes that although Plastic Surgery rarely provides an opportunity for life-saving surgery, the opportunities for quality-of-life-saving surgery make it the most satisfying specialty there is.
