About me

My name is James Langdon. I have worked in Hertfordshire as a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon since 2011. My clinical practice is purely dedicated to treating patients with back problems including disc problems (disc prolapse / slipped disc), sciatica, arm pain, neck and back pain, fractures and spinal stenosis. I am an expert in managing disc problems and spinal stenosis.

When appropriate, I believe in minimal intervention to treat spinal conditions and I will exhaust the non-surgical treatment options (including spinal injections) before recommending surgery. I work closely with physical therapists, radiologists, pain specialists and other health professionals to optimise patients’ treatment prior to undertaking any surgical procedures. I ensure that I take the time to explain things clearly in easy to understand terms, enabling patients to make informed decisions about their treatment options.

My main surgical interest is in the use of minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques. I believe that the use of these techniques reduces post-operative pain, reduces length of hospital stay, and improves patient outcomes. I offer a full range of surgical treatments for degenerative spinal conditions including lumbar microdiscectomy, spinal decompression, minimally invasive spinal fusions, anterior cervical decompression and fusion / disc replacement, balloon kyphoplasty, as well as spinal injections.

I qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School (now part of Imperial College School of Medicine) in 2000. I undertook my specialist orthopaedic and spinal training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and I also underwent a one-year UK advanced training fellowship in spinal surgery as part of my training. I have lived in Hertfordshire since 2008 and was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon to West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust (Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Watford) in 2011, where I am currently the Clinical Director for Trauma, Orthopaedics and Spinal surgery. I have seen patients privately at Spire Harpenden Hospital since 2012.

I am on the GMC specialist register for Orthopaedic surgery. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I am a member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, the Spine Society of Europe, and the British Orthopaedic Association. I have published several research papers on trauma and orthopaedic surgery. I have presented this work at both national and international meetings.

I currently live in Berkhamsted. I enjoy time spending relaxing with my young family and 2 dogs, as well as trying to keep fit and cooking. Despite no longer playing, I remain a keen rugby supporter.
