Dr Stewart helped to set up and run the Combined Assessment Unit in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This is one of the busiest unit in the UK and so has built up an extensive knowledge of the presentation of acute medical problems. Laterly he was the Associate Divisional Medical Director for Medicine in Lothian responsible for running medical services at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh,Western General Hospital and St Johns Hospital,Livingston.

Dr Stewart was a Consultant Physician with an interest in Acute Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh from 1990 until he retired from the NHS in 2015.
Dr Stewart has been involved in all types of research throughout his career laterally concentrating on the diagnosis and management of DVT and Pulmonary Embolism. This has been presented nationally and internationally and won a prize from the Scottish Society of Physicians. Last publication was in 2016
