About me
Douglas Hansell qualified MB,ChB from Glasgow University in 1977. In 1986 he was awarded the degree of MD with Honours from Glasgow University.
In 1990 he was awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow which was undertaken in the USA at the Mayo Clinic, the Massechussets General, New York University Medical Center and Duke University.
Since 1992 he has been a Consultant Surgeon with a special interest in Breast Disease, setting up the first “one stop” breast clinic in Stobhill Hospital and then in BMI Ross Hall Hospital. He also founded the first Breast Family History Clinic in the West of Scotland shortly thereafter.
His other main area of interest is gallstone disease, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole surgery).
Since the 1970s he has been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research, and has published widely in the international medical literature. He has given numerous invited lectures and presentations worldwide.
In 1996 he was the recipient of a Local Health Council Award for breast services in Glasgow.
Douglas Hansell is a Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, a Member of the Association of Breast Surgery at BASO and a Member of the British Association of Surgical Oncologists.
He was the Lead Consultant for Breast Services for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde from 2008 - 2015, and within BMI Ross Hall Hospital is the Lead Clinician for Breast Services, and Chair of the Breast Multidisciplinary Team.
Douglas is also the Lead Clinician for Breast Services, and Chair of the Breast Multidisciplinary Team at Glasgow Nuffield Hospital.
He is also the Lead Consultant of the Glasgow Breast Care Clinic.
He is also a Director of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.

Breast:
- All aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of benign breast conditions (lump, pain, lumpiness, nipple changes, skin changes, discomfort).
- Also all aspects of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, including oncoplastic surgery (reconstruction, reshaping).
- Management of patients at increased risk of breast cancer (family history, gene defects).
Gallstone:
- laparoscopic cholecysatectomy (keyhole surgery).
