About me

I qualified in medicine from Oxford and Manchester Universities then undertook postgraduate training in the Liverpool and Manchester regions. I was fortunate to work with Professor Sir Miles Irving for 4 years obtaining particular expertise in gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery and the management of inflammatory bowel disease and fistulae. This culminated in the award of a Hunterian Professorship in 1986 for my work on Crohn's disease and fistulae. As a senior registrar I trained in the newly developing field of laparoscopic surgery. After taking up my post as consultant surgeon in 1991 I developed laparoscopic surgery at both Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Fylde Coast Hospital. I have now personally performed over 4,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies and over 4,000 laparoscopic hernia repairs. I am a designated colorectal surgeon and perform a wide range of laparoscopic colorectal procedures including right hemicolectomy, anterior resection, abdominoperineal resection and rectopexy. I also perform surgery for complex Crohn's disease.
