About us

Christof Kastner is a Consultant Urologist based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
Apart from his expertise in general urology, Christof is one of the UK leading experts in assessment and treatment of benign and cancerous prostate disease.
His specialist training took place in centres including Guy’s Hospital, Guildford and UCL. Together with his colleagues in Addenbrooke’s and in other centres in Europe, Christof is at the forefront of the development of new prostate cancer assessment and treatment pathways and technologies.

For men presenting with symptoms of prostate enlargement or the suspicion of prostate cancer, Christof offers a comprehensive assessment allowing an individually tailored treatment.

Transperineal Prostate Biopsies using MRI-US fusion guidance (M-TTP)
– Christof and his colleague Andrew Doble are the only surgeons in the UK to be able to offer this most advanced technology to diagnose prostate cancer.
Having learnt the technique of transperineal prostate biopsies in Guildford and at Guy’s Hospital, Christof was able to contribute to the refinement of this technique since he joined the prostate team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He was able to bring purpose-built MRI-TRUS fusion technology to Cambridge and the two partners are founding members of an international study group to further develop this technology as part of newly emerging assessment pathways.

The accuracy of his assessment allows Christof to counsel his patients with high confidence and inform about treatment options like Robotic prostatectomy, Radiotherapy, Brachytherapy, including Focal therapy, Active surveillance, Hormonal treatment and Chemotherapy.
As part of the team offering the above treatments, Christof provides

Brachytherapy for Prostate cancer
– Christof has experience in more than 300 cases of brachytherapy. Having learnt this technique at Guildford and Guy’s Hospital Christof has joined the brachytherapy team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2009. Together with his colleagues Simon Russell and Andy Doble they can offer a high precision insertion of radioactive seeds with minimal side-effects. This technique also allows application of Focal treatment in suitable patients.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP) for obstruction of the urinary flow
– Christof has performed more than 500 HoLEPs since 2007 and is one of the most experienced HoLEP surgeons in the country.
Christof was the first trainee in the UK to formally learn this superior technique to unblock the water passage from the bladder. He subsequently trained other trainees and senior surgeons nationally and internationally and was involved in the development of the mentorship programme which is now internationally used. He has published about the learning curve of HoLEP and is now the secretary of the UK Holmium User Group.
