About me

Dr Goldsmith is a Consultant Neurologist trained in Cambridge, Oxford, London and Newcastle. He matriculated at Magdalene College, Cambridge University in 1988 having been awarded S (outstanding) grades in STEP (Cambridge Entrance) examinations in Physics and Chemistry. He read Medical Sciences Part 1A and Part 1B and Natural Sciences Part II and graduated with a triple 1st. He then attended Oxford University Clinical School, was awarded a Clinical Scholarship and graduated from Worcester College, with BM BCh in 1994.
General medical training was undertaken at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, Hammersmith Hospital, London and Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge. Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) Part 1 was achieved in 1996, Part 11 in 1997. Specialist neurological training was undertaken at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, RVI, Newcastle and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. During this period he also returned to Cambridge University, this time with St John’s College, where he undertook doctoral research culminating in the award of a PhD in 2002.

He returned to his native North East in 2008 to take up post as Consultant Neurologist at the RVI, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with an outreach clinic in Hexham and was appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University in 2009.

Dr Goldsmith has published widely, currently in excess of 40 peer reviewed publications.

Clinical interests cover broad areas of neurology, with particular interests in headache and movement disorders. He runs specialist botulinum (botox) injection clinics for the treatment of dystonia, sialorrhoea (dribbling) and facial spasms and also offers injections privately for the treatment of migraine and excessive sweating, although it is a rarity that headaches cannot be adequately controlled by other means.
