About me
Smruta is a fully accredited registered gynaecological surgeon, who has also done extra sub-specialty training in gynaecological cancers. She qualified from Goa University (Goa, India) in 1995 and then undertook a post graduation in Gynaecology, which she completed in 1998. At this time she wrote her thesis in Ultrasound study of pelvic masses. She commenced her training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Aberdeen, Scotland; and completed it at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, where she successfully gained the Certificate of specialist training in Gynaecology and subspecialist training in Gynaecological Oncology.
During this time, she also undertook a Continuing Professional Development certificate in Palliative care at Teesside University, which has helped her understand the pain mechanisms and management of the same in gynaecological conditions (benign as well as cancers). She is also accredited by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
Ruth actively participates in clinical as well as laboratory research, which include systematic reviews, meta-analysis and understanding the molecular biology of certain ovarian conditions and cancers. She has peer reviewed journal articles for various journals prior to publication and participates in decision-making regarding grant applications for research for some charities. You can have direct access to some of her academic work through PubMed academic search engine.
Smruta has been a consultant since 2009. Although her specialty is gynaecological cancer, she also treats people with a range of gynaecological problems such as borderline tumours, abnormal bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy and ovarian cysts.
Another special interest is vulval disorders, and she currently runs a central tertiary referral clinic for vulval conditions in the NHS. Ruth offers laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery for a range of gynaecological conditions. She considers and offers fertility- conserving operations, where the uterus and ovaries can be conserved if appropriate.
Smruta believes in holistic care and feels it is important for not only the patient but also her family to have access to information that is individualised and to this extent, she offers her patients information that has been developed and collated regarding their condition and their treatment.
