About me
Having studied medicine in Edinburgh as an undergraduate, Mr Clayton qualified in 2000 and remained in Edinburgh for his basic and higher specialist surgical training. He undertook a specialist training fellowship in complex surgery of the Foot & Ankle in Glasgow in 2009, followed by a lower limb reconstruction fellowship in Toronto. Mr Clayton has undertaken further specialist training in ankle replacement and forefoot deformity correction surgery with leading European Foot & Ankle specialists in cities including Zurich, Bordeaux, Paris and Padua.
Mr Clayton took up post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in February 2010 as the first surgeon in Fife with a major subspecialty interest in Foot & Ankle surgery. He performs the full range of Foot & Ankle surgery including ankle replacements, hindfoot deformity surgery, ligament reconstructions and arthroscopic ankle surgery using modern techniques. He carries out forefoot deformity correction using techniques which including the scarf osteotomy for bunion surgery; this allows rapid post-operative mobilisation without the need for plaster casting. He introduced the Cartiva implant to Scotland for treatment of arthritis of the great toe (hallux rigidus) He also performs trauma surgery.
Mr Clayton has taken a leading role in developing Foot & Ankle surgical services in Scotland and has organised and taught on specialist aspects of Foot and Ankle surgery for trainee surgeons and other health professionals.Mr Clayton's surgical interests include all surgery of the Foot & Ankle.
Mr Clayton has a nationwide reputation in Foot and Ankle surgery. He currently serves on the council of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and has previously served on the society's Scientific Committee.
Specfically in the forefoot, surgical interests include bunion surgery, Scarf osteotomy, Minimally invasive surgery (MICA), Morton’s neuroma, toe deformity correction. In the hind foot: heel pain including Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) and surgery for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain. In the ankle and hindfoot: in particular ankle arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, treatment of ankle pain and instability, Brostrom reconstruction, internal brace, ankle arthritis, ankle replacement, arthroscopic ankle fusion and painful flatfoot.
