I specialise in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis. I also have research expertise in hip and knee arthritis, its causes and treatment. I also specialise in joint replacement in patients with inflammatory arthritis.
I qualified and trained in Sheffield. I undertook a PhD in the science of hip replacement at the University of Sheffield, which I completed in 2001.
I received his specialist training in the treatment of hip and knee problems in Sheffield and at the Wrightington Hospital (where modern hip replacement surgery was first developed).
I also underwent specialist fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan.

I am the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Sheffield, and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital)
My research focuses on developing patient decision support tools that help patients make informed choices about joint replacement, the interaction between joint replacements and the patient, and the genes that cause arthritis.
I receive grant support from the charity Arthritis Research UK and the Health Quality Improvement Partnership, The Cavendish Hip Foundation, and Weston Park Charity.
I am chair of the Research Committee of the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. I sit on the Research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association and am a board member of the Orthopaedic Research Society (USA) and chair of its Annual Meeting Programme Committee. I am a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (USA).
I have received awards from the British Hip Society, The British Orthopaedic Research Society, The Orthopaedic Research Society in the United States, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and I hold the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize.

Independent data from the National Joint Register that examines my practice shows that over the last 12 months my hip and knee replacement complication rate was in the best 5% of all consultants nationally.
A recent survey of patient satisfaction made by my NHS employer showed very high scores (median score of 4.0 out of 4.0 for patient satisfaction).
