Dr Fernandez trained in Pain Medicine visiting pain centres across the UK, Europe and USA. Dr Fernandez was awarded his fellowship in Pain Medicine following training at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London, the Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice by the World Institute of Pain and the Pain Fellowship by the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Ireland in 2009. Dr Fernandez is a Fellow of the faculty of anaesthetists, Ireland and Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK.

Following his CCT in Anaesthesia, Dr Fernandez joined Chelsea & Westminster Hospital as a Consultant in Pain Medicine & Anaesthesia. Dr Fernandez gained further experience as a Consultant in Pain Medicine & Anaesthesia at Imperial College Healthcare, St Mary`s Hospital, Paddington and Charing Cross Hospital, prior to moving to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore.

Within a year of moving to RNOH, Dr Fernandez established the Neuromodulation Centre at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, offering complex patients the option of Spinal Cord stimulators and Peripheral nerve stimulators according to NICE guidelines.

Dr Fernandez has sessions in Acute Pain management, Chronic Pain Management and Anaesthesia for Major Spinal surgery and Regional anaesthesia for Shoulder and upper limb surgery. He is involved with developing pathways for complex pain patients with an aim to create a seamless integrated pathway for excellent patient care.

Dr Fernandez` main role is to manage patients with Chronic pain. His interests are in management of neuropathic pain states, persistent neuropathic pain, Complex regional pain syndrome, Sympathetically mediated pain, persistent Lower back pain, mechanical axial pain states (neck and back pain), coccydynia, phantom limb pain and peripheral nerve injury or plexus injury induced neuropathic pain.

His interests in interventional pain management include a wide range of therapies including therapeutic selective nerve blockade, neurodestructive procedures when indicated and Spinal cord stimulators(neuromodulation), including but not limited to
1. Interlaminar epidurals in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar areas
2. Transforaminal Epidurals in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar areas
3. Selective dorsal root ganglion blocks in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar areas
4. Pulsed radiofrequency procedures to a range of nerves including
• the stellate ganglion
• dorsal root ganglion
• sympathetic plexuses
- Genicular nerves (for knee pain)
- Suprascapular and axillary nerves ( for shoulder pain)
5. Peripheral Electric Nerve Stimulation techniques to areas of neuropathic pain including
• scar site pain
• post thoracotomy pain etc.,
6. Radiofrequency denervation including cervical, thoracic and lumbar facet joint medial branch rhizotomy
7. Sacro Iliac joint pain via selective blockade or radiofrequency denervation techniques
8. Spinal cord stimulators for neuropathic leg pain and in persistent neuropathic pain states, complex regional pain syndrome, peripheral nerve injury induced neuropathic pain, brachial plexus avulsion induced neuropathic pain etc..,
9. Peripheral nerve stimulators for peripheral nerve injury

Dr Fernandez has a wide range of pharmacological options to manage nociceptive, neuropathic and mixed nociceptive-neuropathic pain and is well versed in opioid management strategies. Dr Fernandez uses a multi dimensional, multi disciplinary approach for management of pain.

Dr Fernandez has been an invited speaker on management of Complex Chronic Pain and Cognitive approaches for pain management both nationally and internationally and believes in active application of these techniques in his daily practice.
